Oh, my, a birthday cupcake for meEngaging activities for the mind and body. Food for the soul. Friendship. These are the essence of Kokoro Kai, our adult day program designed for elderly Nikkei living in the community. Our goal is to help participants maintain independence, enhance their quality of life and promote health and wellness. If you have an elderly relative who would enjoy conversation over lunch with friends, benefit from mild physical and mental "exercise," and participate in outings in the community, Kokoro Kai is the program of choice for your loved one.

Kokoro Kai, which means "a meeting of hearts and minds," is housed at Nikkei Manor, our assisted living facility in Seattle's International District. The program days and times are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fees range from $30 to $34 per day.

"We certainly appreciate all the nurturing that you have given to our mother. It is quite evident in the bright outlook and confidence that she exudes."

"The volunteers and participants of Kokoro Kai are like family to my father."
-Kokoro Kai Family Members

"My niece encouraged me to come, even though I was hesitant….it's the best thing I've ever done."
-Kokoro Kai participant

The schedule changes daily, but includes activities such as cooking, arts and crafts, Japanese cultural activities, and singing. Every day, we have a morning "tea time" and a half-hour of light exercise. Participants also enjoy free time to play games or socialize with friends. Delicious and nutritious Japanese and Western style lunches are prepared on-site in the Nikkei Manor kitchen.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Is transportation provided?
  2. Yes, we provide door-to-door transportation in our wheelchair-equipped buses for those who live within Kokoro Kai's bus route. For others, arrangements can often be made with volunteer drivers if family members are unable to bring them.

  3. What are the fees?

  4. There is a daily fee of $30.00 to help cover program costs. This fee includes transportation, lunch and snacks, activities and outings. Nikkei Concerns substantially subsidizes Kokoro Kai since participant fees do not cover the full cost of the program. For those participants who can benefit from more individualized group activities, a smaller "class E" is available, at a cost of $34 per day.

Kokoro Kai is a great step for someone who may be considering a move into Nikkei Manor. We also have some participants from out of states or from Japan while they are visiting their family or relatives.

  5. What are some benefits to me as a caregiver?

  6. We know that all full-time caregivers need opportunities to relax and renew. While your family member spends the day with friends at the program, you will have a break to go shopping, run errands -- or just take time for yourself.
