PLEASE Register Early for Spring Quarter 2006
Spring quarter 2006 will start on Monday, April 10. Please register for tours, workshops and classes as soon as you receive Nikkei Horizons Schedule. All Nikkei Horizons participants and members should receive The Tayori with the schedule enclosed. If you don't receive the schedule by the last week of March, please contact Kaori at khigashino@nikkeiconcerns.org or (206) 726-6469. The schedule is available at both Seattle Keiro and Nikkei Manor.

Lunch Bunch
Hungry for lunch and an adventure? Your lunch bunch group decides where to dine from a list of options presented by your escort. Let your taste buds decide! Enjoy the company, sightsee and possibly shop along the way. Price includes transportation and lunch for your escort and driver & participants pay for their own meal. Join us! These outings are a wonderful way to stay connected to your peers and try restaurants around Puget Sound.

Seattle Neighborhood Bakeries
It's a wonderful line up for scents and tastes! Here are the planned stops: Grand Central Bakery in Georgetown, Le Fournil French Bakery in Eastlake (where we'll have lunch) and Hiroki in Roosevelt (where Nikkei Horizons will treat you to a slice of tiramisu.) If time allows, we'll stop by Green Lake for an afternoon walk to work off the day's indulgences!

Chihuly Glass Tour
Dale Chihuly is internationally renowned for his work in glass and is celebrated for his massive glass installations. This tour will take us to Tacoma, Chihuly's birthplace, where Bonnie Gallagher, a Chihuly enthusiast and expert, will be our guide as we visit the Tacoma Art Museum, Union Station and the Chihuly Bridge of Glass. We'll also view private installations in the UW Tacoma Library and the Tacoma News Tribune building. The final stop will be The Swiss Tavern, where we'll enjoy lunch with Bonnie while admiring the eight Chihuly Venetians across the top of the bar. There's a bit of walking on this tour, so wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

WORKSHOPS

Hinamatsuri Dolls
March 3rd is Girl's Day in Japan and is also known as Hinamatsuri. During this traditional festival, families with daughters display elaborate sets of dolls with the hope that their daughters will grow up healthy and happy. In this workshop you will make your own set of two dollars, a Prince (Odairi-sama) and Princess (Ohina-sama). Materials will include cardboard, felt and Japanese material. Supplies needed: wood glue, ruler, scissors, pencil, pen, double stick tape, white cotton thread & needle. Yuki Chikamura has been crafting with Japanese paper and material for over ten years.

Driver Safety Program
This two-day workshop presented by AARP is especially designed for motorists age 50 and older to help them improve their driving skills and avoid accidents and traffic violations. Class topics include: problems older drivers face; how to adjust for changes in vision, hearing and reaction time; how to handle various road challenges; and review of traffic signs, lane markings and rules of the road. There are no tests and graduates age 55 and older are eligible for discounts on their auto insurance premiums. Fred Sakura has been volunteering as an AARP driving instructor for over five years. Bring a sack lunch and a $10 check payable to AARP for materials.

Change in Workshop Schedule:
This driver safety program taught at the Midori Condos on Tuesday & Thursday, March 7 and 9, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. has been changed to Tuesday & Thursday, March 28 and 30 for the same times.
